Introduction

You have been hired to work for Three Science Night, a hip hop record label owned by Grammy Award winning record producer and leading music industry executive, Jive David.  You have written songs for such artists as Justin Timberpond, Wilimina Aguilera, Fantasy, Jennifer Mohawk, and Whitney Texas.  Three Science Night has just signed the most sought after artist in the industry today, 75 cents, who needs to release a single soon.  You are in charge of writing his first song, which must include the topic - Matter and its States.  You must also deliver the song to him and graphically package it into an album.

The Task

The Process

  1. You have to bring your team together to brainstorm ideas.  Your assigned team consists of 2 songwriters and a graphic artist.  Decide amongst yourselves who is going to be Songwriter #1, Songwriter #2, and Graphic Artist.  Also, each member of your group needs to pick a different phase (solid, liquid, or gas).
  1. Using the attached links your group will research the Internet to understand what matter is, the states (phases), properties/characteristics, particle arrangement, phase changes, and examples.  Each group member should take turns researching the Internet.  Songwriter #1 will be in charge of filling out the worksheet, but all group members need to contribute information.  Be thorough, as you will need this information to create your song.  Feel free to add any other information researched about matter, to the bottom of your worksheet .
  1. Using your worksheet your group is going to create a concept map about Matter.  Each member of the group will contribute information about their chosen phase (solid, liquid, or gas).  Open the Inspiration/ Kidspiration software and create a new file.  Each member will add the required information to the concept map about their phase and each member will add 2 of the phases changes to the concept map.  The concept map should include the title (Matter), the 3 phases, their volume, shape, molecule properties, the changes from each phase (6 total), and at least 3 picture examples of each phase.  You are to include text and spoken words to represent thoughts and information.  When you are done with your concept map, save it and print it.
  1. Your group has to write a song worthy of a #1 hit single reaching the top of the charts.  Songwriter #2 is in charge of typing the song up in Microsoft Word.  Again, each member is required to contribute lyrics about the phase they chose earlier.  Each song must include; 3 verses (one for each phase) that defines what each phase is, includes characteristics of each phase, particle arrangement of each phase, and at least one example of each phase.  You can include more verses if time permits.  See attached examples of science songs.
  1. Your group has to package your song into an album.  Using Microsoft Word, create an album jacket, that includes an album cover, your song lyrics, graphics (if you can, let the graphics convey the message of your song), and on the back cover there should be a small narrative about your group's songwriters and graphic artist and your thank-you's.  The Graphic Artist of your group is in charge of typing and inserting pictures in Microsoft Word.  Again, each member is required to contribute to the album, by helping to find pictures of their phase and helping to write the narrative.
  1. Your group needs to rehearse your song.  Determine the beat your song will be sung to and practice it.
  1. Your group has to perform your song to 75 cents, Jive David, and the rest of the Three Science Night company.  As a group you will perform your song in its entirety.  Each member will perform their chosen phase of matter.  (If there are extra verses, decide amongst your group members who will be performing that part of the song.)

Evaluation

Please fill out the self evaluation form, print it, and hand it into me.

Your overall evaluation will be based on the quality of your work and the completion of every task.  Students will receive a group grade and an individual grade based on the following evaluation.  The group grade is based on the final product handed in and the performance of the song at the end of the webquest.  The individual grade is based on the completion of the requirements for the chosen role and the chosen phase of matter.  The two grades will be averaged together for one final grade.

Conclusion

Now that you are aware that matter is all around you and that it takes the form of solids, liquids, and gases, look around at the different objects you encounter throughout your life.  Think of the properties they exhibit. What else would you like to know about Matter?
